Join SoapBox Spoken Word CIC for our free, regular monthly spoken word open mic night. Ipswich's first & longest running dedicated spoken word open mic night. Launched in 2012 at The Spread Eagle, we've been running throughout the past 13 years (bar the weird pandemic bit).
Always fun, friendly, diverse and unapologetic. Poetry rap, comedy, storytelling - originals & covers - all words welcome. Hosted by Amy Wragg.
5 mins per person, sign up on the day or pop us a DM on insta to book in advance (if needed), or email getonthesoapbox@hotmail.co.uk. We always have space on the night to take part, so no pressure. Come along and enjoy the wordy nerdy fun as a cherished member of our audience, or have a go yourself. We are a kind and low pressure filled event that is radically inclusive, and passionately supportive of the brave people who get up and take the mic. We believe in the power of being 'present' and for bringing your full self to this lovely literary showcase.
Latecomers welcome, but we can't always gurantee a performance spot if you arrive after 8pm. Please do come and listen at anytime. This is a brilliant, beloved and popular event, averaging 18 people taking part. And because we know the power of words, stories & ideas, we always welcome two or three poets to the mic, then have a short break. (And repeat until we hit 10pm). We always start & finish on time, as we know lots of our friendly regulars have got buses & trains to catch. (Including the organiser, Amy).
The Spread Eagle is Ipswich's oldest pub, and we might call them Ipswich's bravest too! They have been incredily supportive and kind, giving us space for our spoken word open mic, for so many years. We love their creativity, fab ale, and brilliant staff. Due to licensing laws (and the adult language/content) this event is 18+ only.
(Please keep your eyes open for a new accessible open mic event coming soon from SoapBox... You told us, we listened)
We believe in loyalty, so Words & Verses will always live at The Spread Eagle, for as long as they'll have us. SoapBox has been running events (in one form or another) for 19 years, including working professionally at major UK Festivals, and the most important part of an event that is unseen, is the venue manager/owner and their support. Especially for an event like ours, that welcomes people sharing their often intensely personal words on a mic with people in a room. A HUGE thanks to Em and the team at The Spread Eagle. Please buy a drink from the bar and return the kindness they have shown us. Alcohol-free options available too.
Please note, bigotry is not welcome. No misogyny, racism, homophobia, transpobia, islamophobia, zenophobia, etc. Basically, don't be a dick, and always punch up not down. We also do not allow heckling, unequivocally. No, we won't always agree, but we can listen and be kind, and afford others the same level of respect that we wish to be given ourselves.
Words & Verses is the first Tuesday of the month, at The Spread Eagle, Ipswich, 7-10pm, free entry 18+
Can't wait to hear what you have to say.
