So you've found this flyer and it sent you here. Welcome to the SoapBox. We run poetry and spoken word events across East Anglia, and are based in Ipswich. We've been running them since 2006 - now in our twentieth year - so we really love what we do: creating friendly, safe and inclusive events for people to share their words, stories, ideas, hopes and dreams.
We're not snobs either and we love nothing more than someone sharing their work on the mic with us, for the first time. No one gets to decide where poetry ends, and we include ourselves in that. We welcome all kinds of spoken word, which includes: poetry, rap, comedy, storytelling, comedy, prose, monologues, and everything in between and outside the lines. There's just one rule, spoken word only. No backing music or live instruments. Our focus is your words. We hope you'll come share them with us at an event soon.
Spoken word open mics run like this. Either email in advance to book a spot - usually five minutes - or turn up on the day and sign up on the board. We usually fit everyone in, and some people do less than the maximum time. Each one is hosted by Amy Wragg, sharing both her own work and some favourite covers too. We have lots of comfort breaks at our events, so there is a relaxed atmopshere. We very much wlecome people who just want to watch and listen, we don't pick on anybody, and latecomers are very welcome too.
