My name is Matt. I'm a local poet, born and raised in Suffolk. I'm currently studying English as a mature student at UCS, and I recently became the 2016 winner of the Student New Angle Prize for my short story 'The Bridge', which has been published as an e-book via the 'Suffolk Writes' scheme. I have been reciting my poems at several poetry cafes and open mic events in Ipswich where I have gained confidence, and received lots of positive responses to my work from a variety of audiences. I was inspired by the young poets at the 2016 'Poetry By Heart' regional finals, and I am now starting to recite my poems from memory, venturing into the realms of performance poetry.
In the past I entered the 2000 regional poetry competition run by Anchor Books. Two of my poems were successful and were published in two different anthologies. In 2006 I entered the competition again and had another poem published. I was also runner-up in the 2007 Crabbe memorial poetry competition, run by the Suffolk Poetry Society. Last year I began writing a blog. My intention is to share, explain and explore some of my poetry. I found this experience to be deeply satisfying and cathartic and I hope to continue my work on there. My other plans for the future include continuing my studies, writing and performing more poems, and setting up a creative writing workshop at UCS.
